Kunming Travel Guide

Visiting Kunming: A Guide

Are you looking for a city that has a laidback atmosphere and a warm population?  You'll find that Kunming is just such a place.  While the wonders of Beijing might be grander, you will not find a more comfortable, welcoming city than Kunming.

The city, once home to antique wooden buildings and cramped alleyways, has given way to a modern metropolis, with palm lined streets and modern skyscrapers.  Despite all the modernization, the welcoming spirit of the people remains unchanged.

Bronze Drums Hall

If you love history, Bronze Drums Hall is for you.  Home to numerous archaeological treasures from Jinning, Wanjiaba and Lijiashan, the Hall is an incredible place for those wishing to explore China's storied past.  The Bronze Drums date from the Warring States period and come from the area around Dai Chi. However, the drums are not the only attraction in the hall; explore to your heart's content.

Yunnan Provincial Museum

The museum has been completely renovated to match the new modern city and offers incredible ways to explore the past of the Yunnan region.  You'll find numerous historical artifacts, as well as interactive demonstrations, exhibits and more.  This is one of the "must see" locations in the city and provides enjoyment and learning for the entire family.

Green Lake Park

Located just outside of Kunming, the park is an amazing place to stroll during the cool of the morning or the evening.  Many quaint cafes line the shores of the lake, offering you interesting fare and drinks.  Grab a cup of hot Chinese tea and sample some of the local cuisine, while enjoying the views of the lake.  The Lantern Festival is held here every year, between September and October.  The sight of numerous paper boats with lanterns lit floating on the lake is an incredible one.

Kunming Zoo

The zoo is better maintained than many in China and offers stunning views of the surrounding area, as well.  Wild oxen, red pandas, leaf monkeys, pythons, golden monkeys, alligators from the Yangtze River and great pandas all make up the animals you'll find here.  One of the best things about the zoo is the fact that you can explore the grounds, providing you with the best photo ops of the trip.

Kunming is home to many more attractions that will delight any visitor.  Perhaps the best thing is to simply enjoy the welcoming hospitality of the people, though.
