History of Shenzhen China

Shenzhen was once a fishing village, formerly known as Bao'an County. It was picked by late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping as the first of the "Special Economic Zone" of China. It was picked because of its close proximity to Hong Kong, and it was created as an experimental ground for capitalism in China. The special economic zone idea was a great success, and Shenzhen is now one of the largest cities in the Pearl River Delta region with a population of over 13 million (about 9 million are a mobile population, mainly farmers who gave up farming to become labourers).
