Guiyang City Travel Guide

Guiyang City lies in the east slope of central part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The east longitude is between 106 centigrade 7 minute and 107 centigrade. The north latitude is between 26 centigrade 11 minute and 27 centigrade 22 minute. To the east and south, it borders with Wengan, Longli Huishui, and Changshun of Qiannan; to the west, it borders with Pingba County of Anshui City and Zhijin County of Bijie City; to the north, it borders with Qianxi of Bijie City, Jinsha and Zunyi County of Zunyi City. The total area occupies 8,034 square kilometers, which accounts for 4.56% of the whole city area.

The urban district of Guiyang City, including Yunyan, Nanming, Xiaohe, is 220.31 square kilometers accounting for 1.97% of the whole city area. Yunyan District is in the north of city with an area of 67.5 square kilometers; Nanming District is in the south of city with an area of 89.68 square kilometers; the south of Xiaohe District is 63.13 square kilometers. The countryside, including Huaxi, Wudang, Baiyun, occupies 2194.5 square kilometers. Huaxi District is located in the southeast of city with an area of 957.6 square kilometers; Wudang District lies in the northeast and west of city with an area of 964.9 square kilometers; Baiyun District is in the northwest of city with an area of 272 square kilometers.

Guiyang has another name. That is “Zhu”. It’s said that in ancient time, Guiyang is rich in bamboo. So people use bamboo to make many shapes of musical instruments. From that on, Guiyang is also called “Zhu”.

Guiyang Climate

Guiyang City’s climate has obvious plateau monsoon climate characteristics. It belongs to the moderate-humid subtropical climate. The annual rainfall is about 1200 mm. Because of the effect of global warming, the heavy rain concentrates in the annual July or June. The annual average temperature is 15.3 centigrade. The hottest month happens to be in July. It is often 24 centigrade. The coldest month occurs in January. It is about 4.6 centigrade. In historical records, the lowest temperature is under 9.5 centigrade and the highest is 39.5 centigrade. The frost-free period lasts about 270 days. The pressure is higher in winter and lower in summer. There are some types of natural disasters, such as hail, rainstorm, high winds and acid rain.

Guiyang Festivals

There are many minority nationalities inhabiting Guiyang City. So some unique ethnic festivals are often celebrated, such as “8th, April” of Miao, “3rd, March” of Buyi, “6th, June” and “Tiaochang”. These festivals have provided an excellent opportunity for men and women to look for lovers.

During the national festivals and rallies, the farmers will hold some traditional cultural activities: Di Play, Lusheng Dance, Singing and Horse Racing. Besides that, the weddings, liquor regulations and the funerals that full of strong national emotions must attract so many tourists. If you are lucky enough to take part in these national festivals, you will feel the strong minority emotions.

Guiyang Food

The food in Guiyang City emphasizes on “Ma and Spicy”. The “Ma” and “spicy” have obvious distinction. “Ma” is made up of several spices. “spicy” is refined from the raw material – peppers. When you taste the “Ma and Spicy”, you’d better have a local drink – Maotai Wine. Near the Guiyang University, there is a street called “snack street”. This is the very place that you can’t miss if you get to Guiyang. In addition, the center square of Guiyang City also has many snacks in the evening. You can sit there tasting them.

Guiyang Shopping Road & Entertainment

The main shopping road in Guiyang is China Road and Yan’an Road. The China Road is the formal commercial street, while Yan’an Road is mainly based on small commodities and opens to people very late in the evening. Guiyang has many local and national characteristic handicrafts.

The nightlife of Guiyang is extraordinarily exciting. It’s said that the nightlife often begins from nine o’clock. There are over 10 theaters, many nightclubs, bars and cafes. Young people often like to go there. In the recent years, more and more tea houses are developing. Besides tasting the fragrance of tea, people can watch some folk performances.

Tour of Guiyang China

Guiyang is typical karst topography. There are many tourist attractions of interest. Most of them are built in Ming and Qing Dynasty.

Hongfeng Scenic Area is a national scenic area. It is 32 kilometers away from the west of Guiyang City with and area of 240 square kilometers. It covers four scenic areas: North Lake, Middle Lake, South Lake and Back Lake. The lake is so clear and winding. More than 190 big and small islands and peninsulas scatter in the center of the lakes, which form a marvelous landscape. In the scenic area, there are Diaojiaolou of Miao Village, Drum Tower of Tong Village and Stone House of Buyi Village. All of them have their own features.

Baihua (hundreds of flowers) Lake is in the northwest of city. The lake area is 13.5 square kilometers. It’s famous for elegant environment and beautiful sceneries. There are over 100 small islands in the center of lake. You can see many river gulls, ducks, egrets and unknown birds over the lake.

Forest Park is 2.5 kilometers away from the southeast of city. It was built in 1960. Now the forest park occupies 3,900 hectares. It is the largest urban forest park in China. In the park, there are many majestic mountains and green trees. This is a better place to enjoy the cool air. Apart from them, there are artificial lakes, a deer park and a bonsai garden.

Xifeng Spring is 40 kilometers away from the northeast of Xifeng County with seven hot steaming spring eyes. It will gush out 10,000 tons of natural hot water in one night. The water temperature ranges up to 53 or 56 centigrade. This water is rich in radon, calcium, magnesium, sodium, tian and other elements. People can drink it or use it to take a bath, because it can cure many diseases.

The Golf Resort located in the suburbs of Guiyang City. It closes to the Guizun Highway. The environment is so quiet and the terrain is flat. People here can breathe fresh air. This place is the only one golf course of plateau forest with perfect facilities in China so far. It reaches the international standard. If you like, you can go there to play golf with your friends.
