Hong Kong Tourist Attractions

The Sights of Hong Kong

The city of Hong Kong is home to nearly 14 million people, incredible shopping and dining, an incredible array of business concerns and even stunning natural beauty.  The city is a bewildering mixture of Asian and western influences, which results in one of the most enjoyable stays ever.

However, finding your way to the top attractions in the city can be somewhat difficult; knowing where to go will save you some time and effort.  Here are some of the top destinations for travelers in the city.

Chi Lin Nunnery

The Chi Lin Nunnery is housed in an incredible Buddhist complex, dating back to the 1930s.  The building was rebuilt in the late 1990's and features the style of the Tang Dynasty.  Lotus ponds, serene areas for contemplation, silent nuns and mystical chanting combine to create one of the most amazing areas of the city.  Whether you are religious or just curious, the nunnery is a "must see" in Hong Kong.

Cheung Po Tsai Cave

Cheung Po Tsai Cave is located on the southwestern side of the city and was once home to the notorious Chinese pirate, Cheung Po Tsai.  His fleet of 600 ships and private army were terrors in the area during the early 1800s.  The cave is reputed to be the resting place of his vast fortune in ill-gotten gold and other treasure.  Visiting the cave is a great way to spend a few hours or an entire day in the city.

Cat Street

Cat Street, officially named Upper Lascar Road, is a pedestrian-only thoroughfare lined with incredible shopping.  Antiques, curious, souvenirs and item of a dubious origin can be found in the shops lining the street, as well as spread out on blankets in the road, displayed in stall and hawked in various other ways.  Cat Street Galleries is home to numerous reputable shops, while trawling through the street vendors can be great fun.

Big Wave Bay

Located just north of Shek O, Big Wave Bay is one of the best beaches in Hong Kong.  Visitors will find a golf and country club, pristine (almost deserted) beaches and more.  Prehistoric rock carvings, great swimming and even passable fishing can be found here, providing you with numerous ways to while away your day.  While you will not find public transport to the beach, it's easy enough to reach on your own and is located on the main road.
